Mendhi and Marbling

During trips to Morocco, I became interested in Mendhi, also spelled Mehndi, which is the art of drawing thin lines of henna paste to decorate hands and feet, traditionally done on brides before their wedding ceremonies (see photo on TEXTILES, SCARVES page.) Substituting acrylic paints for henna paste, I developed the skill of painting in this manner, and gradually realized it could be incorporated with my marbling to produce a strong visual presence.  As someone who appreciates sacred art of the world’s diverse religions, I wanted to use fine line painting in ways that would evoke the same emotions produced when viewing sacred painting, particularly Buddhist, Islamic, and Byzantine art.  Tibetan mandalas influence the format from which my marbled paintings evolve.

FOLLOWING THE FLAME

We will periodically add images to the Fine Art section.  Please return to see marbled drawings, a series of large marbled paintings, photographs showing the transformation of a face in Kabuki make-up, and other images which relate in some way to the art work on this website.  The paintings shown here are a small preview of a more extensive collection.  If you are interested in a possible purchase, please e-mail for all images with prices.                                                                                k-art@KRadcliffeArt.com
